The Department of Computer Science and Engineering was established in 2016. At the beginning, research of artificial intelligence and computational intelligence leaded by Professor Xin Yao, the ex-chairman of IEEE CIS, IEEE Fellow Professor Shi Yuhui, as well as IEEE Fellow Professor Hisao Ishibuchi, editor-in-chief of “ IEEE Computational Intelligence Magazine” has become one of the most important research areas in the Department of CSE. The Department of CSE, SUSTech takes the responsibility of making the best computational intelligence research center worldwide, which attracting a large number of teachers and students.

Nowadays, computer science is undergoing a technical revolution, and artificial intelligence has always been the key subject that computer scientists are studying about. Computational Intelligence, as one important domain in artificial intelligence, is designed and enlightened by both nature's and human wisdom. With the advancement of technology, traditional algorithm cannot work out the sophisticated equation in a short time. Therefore, in order to strike for a balance between time and accuracy, computer scientists are inspired by biology, physics, neurosciences and psychology and put forward compute intelligent algorithm. IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (IEEE CIS) is founded in 2003 and it is a professional society which focuses on the domain of intelligent computing by Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Researchers from IEEE CIS devote themselves to “the theory, design and applied research of computing method enlightened by biology and linguistics.”IEEE CIS will award the scholars who made brilliant achievement on computational intelligence.

It is reported that SUSTech possesses a number of experts in the field of computational intelligence. The department head, IEEE fellow, Prof. Yao Xin was the chairman of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society from 2014 to 2015. He also serves as the chief-editor of "IEEE transactions on evolutionary computation" from 2003 to 2008, whose journal enjoys 5.908 SCI impact factor in 2015. In addition, Prof. Yao won "IEEE transactions on evolutionary computation outstanding paper awards" many times. The department's chair professor, IEEE fellow, Prof.Yuhui Shi, was the initiator of the field of swarm intelligence, who now serves as an editor for international academic journals such as "Journal of swarm intelligence" etc. In Google scholar, Prof. Shi has five publications, each attracting more than 3000 citations, totaling 29699 citations in the literature. The department's chair professor, IEEE fellow, Prof. Hisao Ishibuchi now serves as the chief editor of "IEEE computational intelligence Magazine". He was the vice chairman of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society from 2010 to 2013, and ranked 2nd in H-index researcher ranking in computer science of Guide 2 research in January, 2017. Prof. Ke Tang is the vice chief editor of "IEEE computation intelligence Magazine", "IEEE transactions on evolutionary computation", and serves as a committee member in association of evolutionary computation of IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, and the association of emerging scientific technology. The department's adjunct professor, scholar of Peng Cheng, Xiaodong Li serves as the vice chief editor of "IEEE transactions on evolutionary computation", "swarm intelligence". He is also the vice chief chairman of "task force on multi-modal optimization in the association of IEEE intelligent computation.

Nowadays, the research, development and practice of intelligent computing receives broad appreciation by global academia, and has been successfully applied in many fields such as optimizing computing, model recognition, image processing, economic management, electrical engineering, communication networks and biological medicine etc, which relates to national defense, technology, economics, industry, agriculture and many others. Regarding the inter-discipline development, intelligent-X technology makes interact with other subjects perfectly. Many examples have reflected this fact, intelligent electricity grid system, intelligent logistics network, intelligent traffic control system, to list a few. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering in SUSTech sets its core with top-notch experts in computational intelligence, regards the specialty of computing industry and the need of discipline interactions, takes product-teaching-research collaboration as the pathway, will contribute to foster the talents in the field of intelligent computing and its related technology.
