In the evening of June 9, 2017, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering invited 4 outstanding graduates of 2017 majoring in computer science to share their professional experience with other schoolmates. Wang Qi, the Assistant Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, presided over the sharing.Ou ZebinSun JiamingZhang LingqiFang ZhiyuanThe student Ou zebin, who obtained an offer of Zhuiyi Technology, firstly delivered a sharing. He told the present school fellows, to study the natural language processing we should explore the breadth of knowledge through learning to find our own research interests, and then transfer the breadth of knowledge to the depth of research, and ultimately strive for an outstanding outcome in this research area. At the same time, he also recommended his professional books to other students, encouraging them to work hard to achieve their goals. The student Sun Jiaming, who did the internship in the Department of Navigation system algorithm, DJI Company, said that the project could give us an in-depth understanding of the curriculum and theoretical knowledge, and hoped that the students had a geek spirit to complete a project. He also strongly recommended the Carnegie Mellon University public course "Great Practical Ideas for Computer Science". The student Zhang Lingqi, who got the PhD offer from the University of Pennsylvania, gave some advice for applying a PhD. He mentioned that pursuing a PhD degree is one of the most important options in one’s life and one should figure out whether he/she is good at doing research before applying. He also shared some PhD application tips, such as how to find the same research area of the Professor and how to get in touch with Professor. Fang Zhiyuan, who got the PhD offer from Arizona State University, encouraged students to engage in academic or professional exchanges with their teachers and colleagues. Through the experience sharing, the students benefited a lot. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering will also organize more such activities to enrich SUSTech students’ study life.

SUSTech tries to build bridges between top students and top companies, and in this perspective, organised for more than 30 undergraduate students to head over to the High-Tech Park district to visit legendary IT giants Tencent's headquarters. It was a chance to improve students' understanding of the computer industry, and give them the opportunity to think about career planning.Visit to the headquartersTencent employees introduced to the SUSTech professors and students the history of the company, the products it developed, the cutting-edge technology and the latest user experience tools. After the visit, the students are amazed. Junior students Liu Yi said: "Saturday's visit of Tencent let me see so many things from a different perspective." Classmate Le Chichung emotionally explained: "This visit to Tencent's headquarters helped me to fully understand the power and the huge work effort behind these technology giants”.Background informationTencent was founded in 1998 in Shenzhen, China, and listed on the Main Board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2004, one of the constituent stocks of the Hong Kong Hang Seng Index. On June 20th 2016 the World Brand Lab hosted the "World Brand Conference" and published "China's 500 most valuable brand" analysis report, with Tencent ranked in the top three.

Recently, the final result of ASC17 World University Supercomputer Contest has been revealed. Two teams made up by members of SUSTech Computer Research Association, which includes Ge Linfei, Wan Changlong and Chu Chang from grade 2014 of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Under the meticulous guidance by Li, Jingzhi, Associate Professor from the Department of Mathematics and Wang, Qi, Assistant Professor from the Department of CSE, the team stood out from approximately 300 teams, being awarded as the Second Class Prize. From left to right: Ge Linfei, He Kejian, Ding Jiayi, Chu Chang, Wan ChanglongDuring the whole process of the competition, group members attempted to design the server cluster, carrying out the server cluster optimizing and measurement, acquiring great amount of high-performance computer professional knowledge, enhancing the supercomputing applying skills, broadening students’learning and academic communication platform. The ASC World University Supercomputer Contest was established in China and involves members from Japan, Russia, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, the United States and Europe. The international supercomputer community is very supportive of the concept because it is a great way to bring together young future experts, which will be a major driving force for innovation in the industry. ASC is the world's largest supercomputer competition, and along with ISC in Germany and SC in the USA, makes the world's top 3 super-contests. SUSTech's team also participated in the ASC contest last year and received a prize of Excellence.Supercomputers are used in a wide range of applications ranging from weather forecasting to physical simulations (such as simulations of the early moments of the universe, airplane and spacecraft aerodynamics, the detonation of nuclear weapons, and nuclear fusion). Their future development will assist many scientific fields to make considerable progress, and China is a key player in their future development, holding the record for the fastest systems since 2013 (NRCPC Sunway TaihuLight and NUDT Tianhe-2A).
