On August 30, 2018, the inauguration ceremony of the Guangdong Province Key University Laboratory of Evolutionary Intelligent Systems was held at Southern University of Science and Technology. SUSTech Computer Science and Engineering Chair Yao Xin presided over the ceremony. As the person in charge of the laboratory, he welcomed everyone and thanked them for their assistance in developing the laboratory.

Research Office Director Zhao Yusheng said that the Laboratory is the first batch of key university laboratories approved by the Guangdong Education Department for SUSTech. He hoped that through this platform, we could establish more extensive cooperative research with outstanding scholars at home and abroad.

Xu Zhenghe, Dean of SUSTech’s College of Engineering, said that the laboratory takes the intelligent evolutionary system as the main research direction. This is one of the key development directions of SUSTech’s College of Engineering.

The Guangdong Province Key University Laboratory of Evolutionary Intelligent Systems will be based at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at SUSTech.

In order to achieve a breakthrough on the current bottlenecks of existing artificial intelligence technology, which is difficult to self-learn, adapt and evolve, it will focus on forward-looking basic research in the field of artificial intelligence. The three main research directions will be the low-energy computing intelligence, the reliability theory, and method of computational intelligence and the self-evolving technology of computational intelligence.

The laboratory research and development team are currently led by three IEEE Fellows, with a total of 52 researchers, 26 of whom have Ph.Ds. The research team members have published more than one thousand high-level academic papers, which have been cited more than one hundred thousand times.

The team members have won many domestic and international academic awards. These awards include a substantial collection of IEEE awards, like IEEE Institute of Computational Intelligence, IEEE Computational Intelligence Society Outstanding Youth Award, IEEE Donald G. Fink Best Paper Award and IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation Outstanding Paper Award. Other awards include the Royal Society Wolfson Outstanding Research Award, Evolutionary Comprehension Pioneer Award, Second Prize of Natural Science of the Ministry of Education, First Prize of Natural Science of China Electronics Society and the Japan JSPS awards.
