I. Introduction

The Global Scientist Forum at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) aims to provide a platform for academic exchanges and discussions among young scholars at home and abroad, to promote interdisciplinary and academic innovation, and to discuss the approach towards developing world-class universities and disciplines. Through the recruitment of world-class talents, we plan to develop SUSTech into a leading research university with unique characteristics in the world. We now invite qualified researchers to attend the 2017 Global Scientist Forum at SUSTech, Shenzhen on 18-20 March 2017.

 

II. Minimum Requirements for Applicants

(a) Under the age of 40

(b) A doctoral degree obtained from an internationally renowned university and institute; or a Ph.D from a Chinese university with 3+ years overseas working experiences. Research excellence is the most important criterion in selecting the candidates (i.e., Forum participants). We are particularly interested in candidates in the broad field of computer science and engineering.

IV. Application Procedure

Successful applicants will be notified before March 10, 2017.

 

V. Funding for Travel and Accommodation

(a) Free accommodation and food will be provided.

(b) Travels: All invited scholars should purchase their own tickets. We will provide travel subsidies of CNY 6,000-12,000 per person (depending on distance) for overseas scholars and CNY 5,000 per person for domestic ones.

VII. Salary and Benefits for recipients of the “Thousand Youth Talents Program”

SUSTech provides generous remuneration to recipients of the “Thousand Youth Talents Program”as well as one of the best working and living conditions in the sector. In addition to national research funds (CNY 1-3 million) and personal income subsidies (CNY 500,000), Guangdong Province will support each “Thousand Youth Talent” additional research funding of CNY 500,000 and additional personal income subsidy of CNY 250,000. Furthermore, Shenzhen City will provide each “Thousand Youth Talent” further research funding of CNY 5 million and further personal income subsidy of CNY 2 million ( “Shenzhen peacock talent plan B” ). On top of all these supports from the central, Guangdong and Shenzhen governments, SUSTech will also provide research funding of CNY 1 million. In addition, SUSTech will also fund one PhD studentship per year to every faculty member. In short, a recipient of the “Thousand Youth Talents Program” will receive a total of CNY 7.5-9.5 million research funding, and CNY 2.75 million personal income subsidies (which is on top of the highly competitive salaries offered by SUSTech).

 
VIII. About SUSTech

Southern University of Science and Technology is a public university founded in the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone of China. Currently, SUSTech has a total of 318 faculty members, including 14 academicians of CAS/CAE, 12 ‘Changjiang’ scholars, 34 ‘Thousand Talents’, and more than 60 ‘Thousand Youth Talents’. In the ‘Nature Index 2016 Rising Stars’ supplement, SUSTech ranked No. 62 among the top 100 institutions in the world with the most remarkable growth of high quality research papers (the growth rate is 2442.5%, ranking No. 3 in the world).

 

IX. About Department of Computer Science and Engineering

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at SUSTech was founded in 2016.  It currently has 12 professors, all of whom hold doctoral degrees or have years of experience in overseas universities. Among them, two were elected into the 1000 Talents Program in China; three are IEEE fellows; one IET fellow. The department is expected to grow to 50 tenure track faculty members eventually, in addition to teaching-only professors and research-only professors.
